...So I found out at the last minute that I needed to fly out to Jersey today for a family thing. (Long story, don't ask.) Flight into Newark was pretty uneventful, even fairly enjoyable as flights of that kind go. I had an unexpected opportunity, though, to make my way into South Philly over lunch and got an original cheese steak from Gino's.
Gotta say, I was pretty underwhelmed. The vidalia onions were pretty nice, but really all you could taste were the onions and the cheese whiz. Bread was okay, I suppose, but overall it was pretty disappointing. Meat was as dry and flavorless as I've ever had. I can't count how many times I've been told that an original Philly from Gino's was some kind of sublime spiritual experience. Anybody else out there had this experience? Anyone familiar with Gino's--did I just catch them at a bad moment or something?
What's a food that's been hyped to the high heavens that you've found to be pretty unimpressive overall?
