OT: When did "I respectfully disagree" get removed from the American lexicon?

At some point, Americans allowed themselves to be thrown into the trenches of "I'm right and everyone else is an idiot".

When did this happen? When did it become easier to tell someone to "go kill yourself", than it is to say, "I respect your point of view, I just disagree."?

Or, am I just imagining we ever gave each other leeway to have differing opinions that we can respect. Way before the Internet, SNL had this skit in the 1970s:



I was just curious as to the thoughts of the board.
