Tennessee returned to the practice during the bye week as it works on fundamentals, but a slew of Vols were absent Tuesday.
With rumors swirling about potential transfers, inside linebackers Will Ignont and Shanon Reid were both not at practice, neither were freshman wideout Jerrod Means, sophomore receiver Jacquez Jones and senior tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson.
Wood-Anderson was battling a foot injury in the build up for the Florida game, while Ignont, who did not travel to Gainesville, and Jones weren’t at practice on Monday either, per sources.
No Tennessee player is in the NCAA transfer portal as of 4:30 p.m. Just after 5pm, Reid and Jones names were entered in the portal. Head coach Jeremy Pruitt will meet with the media at noon Wednesday.
Elsewhere, embattled quarterback Jarrett Guarantano was taking the first-team reps during all three open periods, including routes on air. Freshmen Brian Maurer and JT Shrout rotated behind Guarantano.
Here are a few other quick highlights from Tuesday’s workout…
With no Reid or Ignont, Aaron Beasley moved back to inside linebackers. It’s the freshman’s fifth position move in a month (safety, linebacker, running back, safety, linebacker). The Vols had six scholarships inside linebackers taking reps, with Daniel Bituli and Henry To’oto’o leading the drills, following by Jeremy Banks, JJ Peterson and Solon Page.
The cornerbacks and wideouts did a press-coverage drill to end a period, with Bryce Thompson winning both his reps, same for Kenneth George. Overall, the receivers struggled in the session. Alontae Taylor appeared to tweak his hamstring on the final rep of the drill.
Jim Chaney was observing the quarterbacks early, with lots of zone read stuff from the unit. Chaney then spent time with the tight ends, who were being coached by a GA as Brian Niedermeyer is out on the road recruiting.
Tennessee’s tailbacks went through various pass pro drills before working on ball security. Ty Chandler, Tim Jordan and Eric Gray led the drills.
Offensive lineman Wanya Morris and Jahmir Johnson were on the stationary bikes. Notably, Emmit Gooden (ACL) is already doing some light work on the bike as well just a couple weeks off surgery.
