I think most hoped to have a chance for an upset but really din’t expect it because of the still significant talent gap we have with GA. Four #1 recruiting classes in a row on top of top 5 classes before that. Four years ago Jones was leaving the cupboard bare and Pruitt was in line to start virtually from scratch. Pruitts done a really nice job of recruiting particularly from where he started from but in reality he still has a pretty good ways to go to get to GA’s talent level.
Our OL had a really bad night which surprised me because I thought we could neutralize their DL a fair amount but not control them. But the GA defense is ELITE at EVERY level and DEEP. to. The # of high draft picks coming off that defense will dwarf the # coming off our offense by a lot.
Defensively we lost our best pass rusher on a STUPID play in the early minutes of the game. We still did some really good things defensively. But we were running thin and staying on the field way to much because of offensive TOs and 3 and outs.
Bottom line is GA will continue to reload but they won’t put together a defense as elite as we just faced regularly if ever. We will continue to improve our roster on both sides of the ball and our defense isn’t far away.
Our OL has a chance to be good against the rest of our schedule. We actually won’t face a single defense nearly as good as we faced last night and I think our offense can have good success. We all knew JG has limitations and wouldn’t be the ultimate answer. But if you are objective he had NO chance in the second half. He shouldn’t have fumbled on his first TO and his INT was all on him. The final fumble and TD return was not his fault, hit from the blindside with a textbook swipe to knock the ball out.
Let’s assume JG doesn’t commit that first fumble. We’re punting from our end zone. If he doesn’t throw the INT. We’re punting from deep in our own territory. I’m not making excuses but the end result would have been very close to the same last night with the OL giving us no chance offensively.
