When I worked at Ford Credit it was routine during a national disaster (areas affected by Hurricanes, Tornado's, etc) to offer customers in those areas a 3-6 month payment extension where the payments are moved to the back of the loan.
Seems to me that might be the better option that could go a little longer in helping. JMO.
