TL;DR version of the below:
Is UT projecting fewer open 2022 class basketball spots to fill as of now than they were 6-8 weeks or so ago? (and it should be said that such is not an entirely bad thing)
@Rob Lewis, seems like our momentum w/ 2022 kids has been fading a fair bit lately w/ us seemingly giving up on Yohan Traore after he blew up and with him apparently looking more towards schools that "recruit in the style of LSU", Brandon Miller seemingly shifting his recruiting focus (including some of the pre-NBA pro options), Mitchell being an FSU lock (amirite, @Russ Wood ), and w/ Wallace having gotten that UK offer. On the other hand, I see a lot more 2023 names popping up more prominently in the War Room.
This may be totally conjecture on my part, but is some of that shifting more from 2022 to 2023 guys perhaps an indication that the staff feels like they will have fewer 2022 spot as fewer guys from this 2021-22 team might be leaving (whether or early or via transfer) than maybe they thought a while back (before NIL cranked up and before they started seeing these guys regularly working out and scrimmaging, etc.) or is it simply the natural moving along of the passage of time?
A few months back, I would have thought KC was almost a lock to be a 1-and-done and BHH was 65-70-ish % likely to do the same, w/ slight chances that JJJ and Justin Powell might have decisions to make. With NIL being a thing, maybe some guys are more likely to stay in school a bit longer as they wouldn't have to fully delay parlaying their skills and faces into getting some cash.
I had been dreaming of a class of BJ Edwards, Cason Wallace, Brandon Miller, and Yohan Traore w/ maybe Ernest Udeh thrown in, but now I am almost feeling like 3 might be all they have room to take in this class and that the strongest focus may be 2 guards and a wing w/ the continued push for and pursuit of Wallace and Mitchell (despite the FSU lock-hood). It kinda makes me think the staff may be expecting to still have all 4 of BHH, Aidoo, ORN, and Uros still around for 2022-23, which I guess shouldn't be terribly surprising.
