Common opponents makes ten times more sense than overall SEC record. The way it currently is, you can literally beat every other SEC East team, and still not be the SEC East champ....?
"Luck of the draw" in terms of how bad the two teams you draw from the other division should not affect the division race imo.
And for the people that say it's about the SEC wanting the team with the better overall SEC record going because they have a better shot at the playoff, explain Ohio State making it this year without even playing for the Big 10 championship.
