  • When he turned pro after the 1960 Olympics his original sponsors/managers were comprised of 11 wealthy men from Louisville - including many people associated with Brown-Forman and
    W. L. Lyons Brown
  • The agreement was for 6 years and the sponsors received half of Ali's earnings during the term of the contract
  • In 1962 - Ali registered with the Selective Service and was classified "1-Y"…unsuitable for military service
  • In 1964 - the Selective Service advised Ali because his writing and spelling skills did not meet the minimum levels he would continue to be classified "1-Y"
  • In 1966 and at the end of his agreement with his Louisville sponsors - the Selective Service had lowered the standards on the minimum test scores for service and 26-year-old Muhammad Ali was reclassified "1-A," fit for service and subject to the draft. The upper limit for the draft was 26-years old
  • In 1967 - the upper limit of the draft was moved to 35 years old and as we all know.........a 27 year old Ali refused to be inducted
