The scuttlebutt, which could of course be misinformation, is that Butch could survive despite the gross incompetence, poor performance, and mismanagement in every phase of the program, whether it be recruiting (lately), game management/playcalling (always), personnel decisions (always), coaching decisions (Iast two years), and PR (always).
I love my Vols. I've loved them since I knew who they were and I was old enough to hold a football and run around pretending to be Dale Carter in my back yard, even though I wasn't old enough to even know who he was. So I'm not going to entertain attacks against my fandom for what I'm about to say; I'm just not.
This is a serious question of collective action: At what point do fans and donors have to withhold their support to make something they care about improve? And is the function of that withholding not renewing season tickets?
I believe it is. I have decided that I can't renew my season tickets if Butch stays on. I'll still end up at a game or two and always support the team, but to my mind, there is no other tangible, meaningful way that donors and the fans have of expressing their displeasure to the decision makers.
It's not wins or losses for me, I've played on some crappy football teams, both in HS and college, and I know that you have crests and troughs in performance in any organization. It's the overall trajectory of the program, the gross incompetence that is evident and the apathy that has set in on fans that I know bleed orange.
It pains me to see so many people depressed and viscerally affected by the mismanagement of Butch Jones. He's a great guy, but that doesn't mean he's a great leader or coach. It's time for him to go, and until he's gone, so is my money.
