I had a SEC defensive coach who would be easily recognized tell me this morning to be able to win at a consistent clip in this league the minimum number of d linemen needed is 14-15, and the minimum number of o linemen needed is 16. He said that includes red-shirt guys. Told me when you have those numbers in the trenches, that is when you start winning and until then it will sporadic at best. He said I don't give a damn how good the coaching is, that's the requisite.

He said you skimp on receivers, and safeties, and put your remaining resources into qbs, tail backs, and a great corner and a good corner.

He cited LSU teams a couple years ago, Florida teams a few years ago, and miss 2-3 years ago. He said go look at those teams. You will see they didn't have super star receivers, they always had a good d back, and two very deep very dominant lines of scrimmage.

The reason I put this out there is looking at what butch and company are doing, it looks very much on par with what he is saying. They are building those lines of scrimmage, but are struggling on the defensive line of scrimmage. It's also a long way until signing day. I REALLY like butler, and the kid from South Florida, name escapes me. The point is, it takes time to build that kind of depth. Yes, smoke and mirrors can get you a great year, but it won't get you a consistently good football team.
