Obviously he started off great at UM with an 11-2 record in year 1 and a Sugar Bowl win. The Captain of that team was Kevin Koger. He was a GA here before joining Elder at EKU.
The OC he hired in his last year after Al Borges left was none other than Doug Nussmeier. Florida's current OC. Nussmeier is a terrible coach and ultimately got him fired.
Mike Vollmer who is acting as the UT Director of Football Operations because of Spognardi's mess was on his staff at Michigan
In his 2nd year, he went 8-4. 3 of the 4 losses came to the top 3 teams in the country. Bama, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. The other losses were at 10-4 Nebraska and against 11-2 South Carolina in the bowl game. They lost to Notre Dame by 7 and Ohio State by 5.
After Denard Robinson, they never got good QB play and couldn't turn the corner.
He signed some ridiculous talent at Michigan:
Frank Clark
Blake Countess
Thomas Rawls
Blake Bars - From MBA, not necessarily good
Jehu Chesson
Amara Darboh
Devin Funchess
Willie Henry
Kyle Kalis
Ondre Pipkins
Chris Wormley
Jake Butt
Taco Charlton
Mike Mccray
Jourdan Lewis
Jabrill Peppers
He almost had that thing turned around, but couldn't quite put it together and just missed the big opportunities in his first couple of years.
His brother is DB coach for the Tampa Bay Bucs and has an SEC history at SC, Florida, and Mizzou. His nephew is a defensive GA for Muschamp at South Carolina.
His coordinators at San Diego State were Al Borges and Rocky Long. They are back together at San Diego State and making a nice run with back to back 11 win seasons.
