First off, a really cool thing for Knoxville to have. Teams from all over the Southeast (Misssissippi, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky) and teams from Indianapolis and Virginia made it in as well.
As for news from the event, Cam Akers was on campus last night after his games finished and enjoyed getting to catch up with the Tennessee staff. He will be back on campus for the Orange & White Game on April 16 with his family so that's a pretty strong development. As we mentioned in the War Room, Georgia and Ohio State are players in there as well, but he really likes the opportunity Tennessee will likely have with Kamara and Hurd likely to be gone after this upcoming season.
As for Akers on the field, he's obviously not a receiver but he caught the ball really well. He made a great one-handed catch while falling the opposite direction of where the ball was thrown. I was certainly impressed with him.
2018 quarterback Emory Jones was on hand and he has a really nice arm. He has the size, too. Probably a little under 6-3, but he's a big kid. He wasn't the most accurate quarterback at the event (That award went to Stanford quarterback commitment Davis Mills who is a great player), but Jones made a lot of throws only an elite quarterback can make. I really liked his game.
As for his recruitment, after talking with him I think Tennessee is the clear team to beat. The Vols are recruiting him the hardest and he feels like he has the strongest connection with Tennessee's staff among anyone else recruiting him. He added he could see himself making a decision soon and that would be good news for Tennessee.
Four-star wide receiver Trey Blount looked very good, too. He's really smooth and has deceptive speed as well. Tennessee is right in the mix there. He will be back on campus this summer to take a closer look at the Vols. But, they are certainly in the mix. He knows Preston Williams and was able to hang out with him while he was on campus.
A few others that impressed included Tee Higgins. Obviously, if you've ever heard me talk about the kid you know I think he's a five-star caliber talent... He did nothing but back that up today. His team struggled to get the ball to him down the field but on one play they threw a jump ball to him down the sidelines and he literally had to be at least 36 inches off the ground and I'd say closer to 40. I mean, the corner jumped, too, but the corner's head only came to Tee's waist. It was insane. He's awesome.
Still a battle there for Tennessee.
Amari Rodgers looked good. He's stocky and shifty and made a couple of plays from what I saw.
The TN Select 7-on-7 squad featured a number of quality players including some of the 2019 instate kids that have been offered by Tennessee. Both Adonis Otey and Lance Wilhoite shoed moments of promoise, Otey in particular looked good. And both talked a lot about Tennessee being a big offer for them.
As for guys on campus, Chandler Wooten was in as was Trevor Lawrence and Javon Leake. If you read our story on Leake earlier this week you know he's already high on Tennessee so that one could be one worth watching down the road.
