All of you all griping about Phil not going for a big hire need to get a grip.
Last week was detrimental to this search. Big time coaches are aware of what happened. This looks like a zoo. Hiring Phil isn't going to change that. Would have been even worse to name an interim AD.
Let's take a look. You could look for a job at Arky, FSU, stay at Purdue, etc. or you could come to a place that is getting absolutely destroyed by the national media every single day for having an unpleasable fan base (some of y'all aren't helping out on that one) that managed to kill two coaching contracts last week (terrible ideas as they may have been). A place where it appears that the boosters are at war with each other and have a history of very bad choices. A place where we negotiated a deal and the chancellor killed it after the coach thought it was a done deal three times in one week! (Apparently with Schiano, Leach, and Brohm).
You think hiring Phil after Currie went rogue last week is going to make all of that go away? You can promise some guy 7-8 million dollars but if you make them feel like they are going to take that money to bury their career in three years they still don't want your money.
You can thank Phil that he is not reacting to this terrible situation by making a kneejerk Haslem hire like Dooley or Butch. If a guy who was less steady and respected were running this search Morris wouldn't even had a phone call with them. He interviewed but clearly he preferred the stability and proximity and non-crazy reputation of Arky.
Money isn't the only piece of the puzzle for good coaches. We look like a terrible situation.
