Long, but you millennials need this....

Go ahead and moan and flail around that we gave up the 500 yards rushing. Cry and whine about how UF is going to murder us. Butch sucks, fire Kongbo, the trashcan didn't line up right, ESPN is mean, etc,etc...

And then sit back and realize that we gave up 4 scores to GT (in regulation).

Had I told you 5 minutes before kickoff that we were only going to give up 3 scores for the game, you would have told me that the defense deserved an A plus for the evening (or I sure hope you would have). No one else ever does any better against those guys.

So we gave up the 4th. In a game where GT was called for a total of 1 false start/motion penalty, had zero holds called, no delay of games or illegal formations, no dropped pitches, no obvious assignment miscues, didn't have turnover problems for large stretches of the game and where we couldn't possibly get any sacks because they never passed and we never rushed by design. Oh, and for the first half our offense couldn't hold on to the ball due to the drops and we kept giving the ball right back to them. So they got an extra couple of possessions.

When UGA, FSU and Clemson play Tech each year 20-28 points and 400 plus yards of offense is the norm. We were bad, but we also took as good of a shot as they could give us and (minus Justin Martin and one 100% perfect thrown pass against Abernathy) held the big plays in check.

And that was CLEARLY the plan. Butch decided to try to win a 38-28 game several weeks ago (and even more so 1 week ago when Kirkland went down). And had we had the 21 point first half we should have on offense he would have been successful. We played back off the ball on defense, never once shot up field, handed them 3 yards up the middle every time they wanted it and never gambled (all to avoid the 60 yard triple option run).

Was giving up 600 yards of offense in regulation crazy? Hell, yes...Do we ever want to see those guys again, Hell, no... But while you are sitting at your keyboard giving up on the season right now, try to remember all the other games in your lives (against vastly inferior offenses) where our defense has given up 20/24 points in 60 minutes and you left the game talking about how awesome they played.

Anyway, just a thought. And yes, I watched the overtime period, saw the other two scores. But overtime was always going to be tough when you were lined up to give up the free 4 yards to prevent the 20 yarder...

Last night was not about a lack of athletic ability. Or even 100% horrible coaching moves. We trusted our offense to show up on the first series (and it took longer) and we assumed GT would play a little less organized and give us a few more 3rd and longs ( they clearly deserve credit for being close to perfect)
