The College Football Playoff management committee meets to discuss expansion Wednesday. Why it's worth watching: The commissioners of the 10 FBS conferences, along with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, are scheduled to continue discussions about a potential expansion of the playoff field beyond four teams. CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said the group must decide on a plan to expand to either eight or 12 teams by January in order for the changes to take effect for the final two years of the event's TV contract with ESPN, 2024 and 2025.

College football's conference championship games are set for Friday and Saturday. Why it's worth watching: Championship week promises to create even more chaos for the College Football Playoff selection committee to sort out. Of the 11 conference title games scheduled this weekend, four seem likely to play a role in determining which four teams qualify for the playoff:

Big 12 (Saturday, noon ET): One-loss Oklahoma State has an outside shot at crashing the playoff after defeating their in-state rivals last night. They'll have to take the Big 12 crown against Baylor to give themselves a chance.

SEC (Saturday, 4 p.m. ET): The showdown we've all been waiting for, undefeated Georgia vs. 11-1 Alabama, should determine whether one or two SEC teams qualify for the invitational.

American (Saturday, 4 p.m. ET): A victory for Houston against undefeated Cincinnati would be a huge relief for the committee, which seems dead set on keeping the CFP exclusive to the Power Five. If Cincinnati takes care of business, they'll have done everything they can to make their case.

Big Ten (Saturday, 8 p.m. ET): Michigan's upset victory over rival Ohio State yesterday upended the conference pecking order, but the Wolverines still need to take down Iowa in the title game Saturday to comfortably lock up a spot in the playoff.
