  • Still unable to speak directly with Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai in the wake of her sexual assault allegation against a top Communist Party official, the Women's Tennis Association announced an indefinite suspension of all competition in China, including Hong Kong, becoming the first major sports property to stand up to the country's increasingly authoritarian government. The WTA stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars in business as a result of the boycott, which CEO Steve Simon said would continue until WTA officials could speak to Peng without government interference and a full investigation of her assault claim could be conducted.   • Notre Dame is expected to promote defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman to its head coaching position following Brian Kelly's abrupt departure for Louisiana State University, sources confirmed, and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees also informed the school of his intention to stay in his role. Kelly reportedly attempted to bring both Freeman and Rees with him to LSU and planned to make Freeman the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football. (The Athletic)

ESPN will become the first publisher to ever monetize a Twitter Space on Thursday when it hosts a college basketball conversation at 2 p.m — but the motive here is not profit. Listeners will pay a $0.99 donation to benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research as part of the network's V Week to hear Jay Bilas, Seth Greenberg, Mike Greenberg, and special guests to benefit a special cause.

FSU athletics director David Coburn's tenure coming to an end, set to retire

Director of Athletics David Coburn, who originally was hired in an interim role before assuming the position fulltime in May 2019, announced early Wednesday evening his intention to retire. Coburn, in a statement released by FSU, plans to retire at the end of the 2022 spring semester or until the position is filled, "whichever comes sooner," he said.

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard announces cancer diagnosis, stresses importance of early detection

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard was recently diagnosed with testicular cancer, he announced Wednesday in a Facebook post. Pollard wrote that after experiencing pain following a workout, a subsequent ultrasound determined surgery was necessary and his right testicle was removed last week. Further testing revealed it was cancerous.
