LawVol had a post last night stating we are so close. We are close but we are inherently far away to. I don’t know how good Cooper Mays is, can be or how far he can go but it’s glaringly obvious we are so thin on the OL that his loss changes the entire complexion of our team and effectively takes us from having a reasonable chance to win to having no chance. Until we get back to around the 85 scholarship level our ceiling will remain artificially low.

The one possible caveat to our immediate limited fortunes could be simply having a a good competent QB and receivers that can catch passes that hit them in the hands. We don’t have to have an elite QB to succeed just for 1 of our top 2 veteran QBs just be reasonably accurate and have our receivers catch the ball.

I have a pretty high degree of optimism that we have a head coach an a basic core of coordinators and assistants can get us competing at a really high level. But I don’t think either one of our current top 2 QBs are capable of being accurate enough passers this year or ever for that matter to give us much chance. I do think our receivers can eliminate the drops to an acceptable level but probably not this year.

Bottom line is we most likely don’t have our answer at QB on campus yet. Even tho literally just handful of key competent players could allow us to make a big jump and have really good success that’s probably not happening until we have the right QB with some experience. We are likely a ways off from that and likely 23 or even later IMO.
