Realizing the Vols appear to be pretty deep at OL positions this year, I wanted to look at their recruiting rankings (composite). I thought the depth chart would be dotted with a ton of highly ranked OL recruits, but that wasn't really the case. Tennessee and CBJ seem to have a very developmental approach to the OL. I wonder if this is by design:
Trey Smith 5* (#4 OT in the country)
Drew Richmond 4* (#3 OT in the country)
Ryan Johnson 4* (#26 OT in the country)
Brett Kendrick 3* (#87 OT in the country)
Chance Hall 3* (#75 OT in the country)
Marcus Tatum 3* (#43 OT in the country)
Riley Locklear 3* (#62 OT in the country)
K'Rojhn Calbert 3* (#63 OT in the country)
Nathan Niehaus 3* (#89 OT in the country)
Jack Jones 4* (#9 OT in the country)
Jashon Robertson 3* (#30 OG in the country)
Venzell Boulware 3* (#39 OT in the country)
Coleman Thomas 3* (# 8 C in the country)
If you compare this to other positions CBJ and staff have recruited, this seems like a pretty low recruiting ranking for a position.
There is nothing wrong with developing OL over 3 years before they start, but I wonder if this is a philosophical choice, or just an inability to close on more highly ranked OL? Either way, 2017 will be a test of the development of this position as they need to be the leaders of the offense in 2017.
