you brought up something today that I've been saying for years about when coaches "sit on a lead", or "play NOT to lose".... Some gentleman (many would put him in the "red" catagory) called in on your show today questioning Butch, his toughness, and his perceived lack of killer instinct when trying to hold onto a lead. I've never called plays or made decisions under pressure in an SEC football game, but being a coaches kid, I remember my old man saying that it's not too difficult to question a play call sitting in the stands, but when the bullets are flying, things tighten up. When the play clock is running, and it's nut cuttin' time, it's amazing how conservative one can become. Against Florida two years ago, Butch was trying to step on their throat when our QB, who had literally gotten his ass handed to him all afternoon, and was just trying to stay alive behind an offensive line that was on skates, got blindsided and fumbled on their end of the field, and that was all she wrote.
Those momentum shifting plays stay with a person, and when a similar situation arises, it's hard to forget what happened the last time you tried to put a game away. Had we just pounded the ball, and at the very worst, punted and maintained some modicum of field position, we likely hold on.
I'm not saying what the coaches did or didn't
do was the right call, I'm just saying before we question CBJ's manhood, just remember what happened in that game. Butch rolled the dice, and it got us beat. I'm going to choose to believe the law of averages is finally going to fall our way this year. In fact, we're going to abuse those fools this year, because there comes a time when
talent trumps all the bulletin board material, losing streaks, and loud mouth corner backs.
Thanks again Brent for bringing that up.
Cheers
