First off, I'm a nobody, but know a little about the o line and offense in general. I am posting this because I've had several ask me if I'd be doing it again. Feel free to agree, disagree, or disregard. Also, if ya want to ask questions or if ya saw something differently, then by all means, throw it out!

Game 1 TN vs. GT Tennessee receives the opening kick, and Evan has a fantastic return. Worth noting, Tennessee has the best special teams units in the country and maybe have been the reason we've won close to 6 games more than would have otherwise since butch has been here. He deserves credit for that imo...

First series we came out in a basically trips left with a snug look to the one receiver side. This is what I call 12 personnel but I'm not sure if butch calls it 22 or not. The h back, to me is zero threat to ever get a carry, therefore 12 personnel instead of 22.

For those that don't know. Personnel groupings are numbered concerning how many running backs and tight ends are on the field. Ex: 1 running back, 2 tight ends sets would be "12" personnel and conversely, 2 backs and 1 tight end would be "21" personnel. So on and so forth.

Dormady gets under center first play and it goes

15JJ is the single receiver to the right, and Tatum is right tackle, trey is right guard, jashon(who snaps left handed, something I hadn't noticed before at center), jack at left guard, and Kendrick at left tackle. Ethan wolf at tight end to the left with brother Eli behind him in the h back position, with JK at back, and finally ending with Brandon Johnson the single receiver to the left.

They were in a 4-2-5 which everybody should be familiar with because it is our "base" package, or what we run the most. Meaning they have 4 down linemen, left to right they have a 5 tech, 1 tech, 3 tech, and a 7 tech although he may be more 6 tech as opposed to all the way over to the 7. Then you have two backers, Mike who is head up over jashon and the Sam which is over the outside shoulder of Brett and the inside shoulder of Ethan. Then you have 5 defensive backs. 2 corners, 2 safeties, and the nickel who is in a 2x4 position meanin 2 yards off the los and 4 yards outside of the emol or end man on line.

First play is, inside zone, and at the point of attack the o line fires off and this part scared me at the game. Only one o lineman got to the second level, only one. Jason. Why? Well, they did a piss poor job on overtake blocks because none of them had a good zone step.
Kendrick and wolf do a good job double teaming the end, neither came off to get to the second level. And had Kendrick come off and went to the Mike, this first play would have been for about 30 instead of the 8 JK got on his own. Jack did a good job with the 3 tech and worked him, although it looks like he got beat, because the ball was supposed to go inside him and he worked his man out. Jashon, the only one to get to the second level gets to the play side or Sam backer and he blocks him. Their Mike took himself out of the play by filling in the left side 5 for what reason, I have no clue. Not sure what his read was. Tatum sees him and for whatever reason turns to block him instead of continuing on his path to the next level, and letting the Mike who took himself out of the play go. Trey doesn't get his head on the right side of the 1 tech and gets beat to his left even though he stays with him, it makes JK think the seam isn't there and is the reason he bounces this play. Eli wolf from his h back slot comes across the line from left to right and kicks the end so he does a good job. Over all, and although not getting it exactly right, something that is wildly different from last year thus far is the fact that every blocker had a helmet on somebody. I saw so many times last year where people weren't blocking anybody. I haven't seen it yet this year. I used to tell my guys all the time. Doesn't matter what happens, DONT STOP, block somebody. Even if you screw it up, put a hat on somebody. So, at this point, MUCH BETTER..

3rd play of the game we are in 12 personnel with 2 receivers to the field and tight end to the boundary. This play is HUGE if a couple guys do a better job. First it's counter to the boundary and trey and jashon both get out very well, and trey kills the d b who comes running the alley lol jashon cuts right off him and goes to block the Sam. Eli wolf blocks the Mike backer and this is a huge play right?!? Wrong. Why? Couple reasons. On the snap, Brett scoops down to the 1 tech, great job, no reason to block the end. Here's where the problem starts, Tatum isn't pulling so he's supposed to back block on the 3 tech but for whatever reason he doesn't! He starts to climb to the next level where NOBODY is.. lol. The three tech slips through and jack who is scooping down towards the opposite side 3 tech just to stop penetration, knocks the three tech Tatum was supposed to block right towards jk. So, one man doesn't do his assignment and it blows up the play with jk getting hit 4 years deep instead of a home run play. Still, at least there is a hat on a hat aside from the one guy. Dang. So close.

A little later and the throw that was around juauns shins was because Jack got out over his toes and got beaten in pass pro. Not bad but just enough to cause Qd not to step into his throw and disrupted the timing and position of his throw. Not horrible but a small thing that disrupts so much. The positive is the next play, they gave him a GREAT pocket, and qd throws it well but a backer gets his hand up and knocks it down.

Few series later and the play where dormady tries to dump it off to JK and they rule it incomplete, the o line does a GREAT job. They give him a good clean pocket but for whatever reason, it takes him FOREVER to pick up the safety blitzing from 12 yards off the LOS. He HAS to see that more quickly and if he does and gets it to JK more quickly, it probably results in a td, plus he doesn't get smashed like he did there. Lol those little things make the differences.

The next play, Tatum gets smoked by 93, and dormady very nearly throws a pick over the middle. The plus is, Tatum really settled in after this.

Offensively, I believe Larry Scott called a really good game, but needs to feed his backs a little more especially when ya have a QB who is making his first start ever and you have two stud backs. That is the only gripe I have with how he called the game. Did some really good stuff with personnel and different formations for the same stuff. I liked it.

I'll get back in here with the 2nd half later and try to get a little more detailed. Just wasn't much offensively to talk about in the first half. Lol

Any questions or gripes, shoot em at me.
