The term ”grandfathering” is outdated because it implies someone was afforded a special privilege based on a handed down birthright.

The challenge that Tennessee faces is that they have “legacy commitments” and they have “legacy assumptions”. Even within the legacy commitments, it appears there are different agreements that were made at different times involving different terms. Tennessee should honor the integrity and intent of legacy commitments. Most seem to have been to allow people to maintain the ability to purchase tickets without making additional donations. Most likely the agreements were made with the intent of it being in effect for those individuals to use as long as they continued to attend games.

I personally know of folks who continue to hold onto what they call “grandfathered” tickets even after the holder of those rights no longer attends games or even after they’ve passed away. I guess it’s a hard thing for the university to manage.

There also seems to be some folks who maintained the right to purchase tickets without a donation because they were season ticket holders before a certain point in time. Some of the same circumstances have occurred even after those people stopped attending. I personally know of people who have continued to buy their “grandfathered” tickets for no other reason than to resell them to profit off of them. Obviously, that has been a little challenging the past 3-4 years but they’ve made some good money most years.

There are many who have over time assumed the commitments to something more or something different that their original intention. That is what I consider a legacy assumption.

I believe Tennessee should honor the spirit of true legacy commitments. I also believe the legacies should have integrity and follow the spirit of the terms under which those commitments were made.
