Maurer is FAR from perfect. He does two things specifically that I believe will help TN be more competitive while Harrison Bailey continues to learn the offense.
1. He is mobile. This makes it much easier on the OL as the RPO actually has an effect on the Defense (Shrout and JG are statues) and pass rushers can’t aim for a set target.
2. He makes quick decisions. Take the video below to the 2 Minute mark - That’s the game against UGA. Look at how quickly he makes decisions and gets the ball out of his hands. If it isn’t there, he usually throws it away.
There are plenty of throws in this film that are not good decisions, but at this point, it’s hard to imagine the performance of the Offense would not improve if Maurer was starting.
