We have recruited some real talent. This talent had very little training with the coaches and zero experience at the SEC level. Fulmer said it takes five years to turn a program that is dead around. You have to recruit the talent to compete and that talent has to be coached along with experience at game level. Thanks to Covid-19 this year added a year to the process.
Alabama, Florida, and Texas A&M had the best quarterback play in the conference and it showed up again yesterday. All three quarterbacks are seniors with experience of playing in the SEC. Saban said it last night: current defenses cannot shut down offenses any more, you have to out score your opponent and hopefully win the turnover battle.
2021 for Tennessee quarterback position will be a big improvement. Bailey will get a full spring practice and learn not to hold onto the ball. J. T. Shrout will learn to not try forcing the ball into coverage. Running back position will be loaded with current talent and some big time freshmen talent. We have most of the offensive line set next year with Morris, Wright, Mayo, and Carvin back. Biggest question is depth. Receivers you have Hyatt, Tillman, Calloway, Holiday, Wideman as wideouts and Warren and Brown at tight end.
Defense will be as good if not improved over this year which was pretty good at the end of the year. Emerson, Garland, Simmons, Thomas on the down linemen. Question depth. Line backer position we have To'to, Banks, Crouch. Pass rusher we have Baron, Harrison, Joseph, French, Beasley. Secondary which was the biggest problem this year on defense we bring back Thompson, Flowers, McCollugh, McDonald, and Slaughter.
With improved quarterback play that allows our offense to open up which we couldn't do this year with what we had at quarterback.
Disappointments: offensive line ability to create holes and pass protect. Is this player or coaching. Secondary ability to cover the middle and the quick outs. Again, is this player or coaching.
Thoughts: You have your head coach and one of the best defensive minds that learned at Alabama and Georgia. They know what it takes to win in the SEC. You have a offensive coordinator that is recognized as one of the best offensive minds in the country. You have a good recruiting class this year that has recruited against the top schools while having a bad year. We already compete well with the conference teams except Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. All three of these schools had big years and out recruited us once again. So realistically how are you going to beat these guys until you are able to equal them on the recruiting front. If we compete with them next year, we can win if we win the turnover battle and play error free ball.
Everyone needs to get off the Fulmer bash. He is a dedicated and loyal Tennessee man. Born and raised in Tennessee, had one of the winningest records for Tennessee coaching, won a National Championship. He knows what it takes to win and he also knows that it takes time to get the program turned around. We now have a great basketball coach and team. I see improvement in women's basketball. He is working hard in all the other sports categories at Tennessee: Swimming, Baseball, Track, Volleyball, Golf.
It's time to support the University and it's coaches. All the negative posts have an affect on recruiting that the competition uses to take talent away from us. We all need to balance our posts. It's ok to voice an opinion, but say whoever needs to improve in a certain area, then follow up is the improvement happening, if not that person loses playing time.
