It may backfire, but it's not any different than the Emory Jones situation. Our coaching staff can afford to take more risks and shoot for the big time stars now.
I believe our staff thinks Fred Hansard, Malik Young, Both Gaddy's, Donovan Jeter, Jordan Williams, MJ Webb, and this new offer to the big 6'6 260 lb SDE from CA are better prospects than RR for DT. We can all agree or disagree, but coaches have to trust their evaluations and board.
Also, ask yourselves a question. Take out the clutter that RR is a Army All American, and that he is an instate kid. Look at the programs he is considering, and look at his ratings across the board by the services. There is a distinct difference in the interest level and offer lists and rankings of the guys i've listed that UT is looking at hard at right now vs RR. RR is looking at Oregon, us, Duke seriously.
Hansard is looking at Michigan, PSU, Clemson closely besides us, and he has offers from Bama, California, Clemson, UF, UGA, Miami, Ole Miss, pretty much the entire SEC, ACC and big 10.
MJ Webb has offers from Auburn, Bama, Clemson, UGA, UF, tOSU, PSU, Michigan, Ole Miss etc...
Breyon Gaddy has offers from everyone, and his top 5 are Bama, FSU, Clemson, Va Tech, and us as the leader.
Donovan Jeter has offers from Bama, PSU, UF, Miami, Michigan, Mich St, tOSU etc...
Jordan Williams has offers from everyone.
RR's biggest offers are UT, Arkansas, USCe, Ole Miss, Louisville, PSU, and Oregon. Now while those are very good offers, his offer list is nothing like the other guys i've mentioned lists. Those guys have offers from everyone, and are actually getting recruited very hard from the top schools.
Guys there is a distinct difference in the offer lists and interest from the big schools towards the guys on our DT board and RR, just being honest.
Taking RR right now when you have the best of the best extremely interested in your school right now would be actually be a "dooleyesque" move IMO.
This program is at a totally different stage than it was 2 years ago. 2 years ago, i bet 100$ we take RR already because we could not afford to miss out on a good player, that is a safe prospect that you know will work hard and not get into any trouble. However, now we can afford to go for the truly elite and difference makers and still have good fall back options if RR ends up turned off by being put on hold. Ben Hutch is a good example of a guy that is about as good as RR and we can get him in the last hour if we want. He is quite similar to RR in many respects.
I would also consider Brandon Gaddy, the smaller one, a DT fall back option. He is extremely athletic and raw, and has not played DT yet, but his body and athleticism scream DT. I think we have more fall back options this year compared to last year.
