DAMN!!! I saw them hit vs a very good La Tech in Millington, TN back in October, so wasnt too surprised, but today is what we need more of. We depended on the long ball almost too much last year and it hurt us in Omaha. It was great to see all the doubles, triples, etc.
1. This weekend belonged to Jorel Ortega and the pitching staff. Ortega was great all weekend, I do wonder if his defense will hold up all season though.
2. Pitching...what can you say, 2 true freshman and a sophomore and you go 3-0 against a good mid major team with a ton of super seniors. Burns and Dollander were electric and you can see why they love Beam. Getting Tidwell and Halvorsen back will be crazy. The bullpen was super impressive with Kirbs, Sewell & Walsh. Toss in the young guys and this staff is set and dangerous.
3. SETH STEPHENSON!!!!! He has got to be in the lineup. Elite elite elite speed, certainly the fastest guy in the SEC not named Enrique Bradfield. He can hit as well and looks like LF is his spot. He is an alpha as well, you can see some Gilbert in him. Can he play 2nd if Booker comes along?
4. The vets: Luc in the 2 hole is interesting and worked, love it. Beck looks like a MLB player and came alive. Drew was Drew, bomb, double, singles, etc. Love seeing him get hits other than going for it all.
5. Lawson and Lipscomb look to have the 5 and 6 hole locked down. Lipscomb was impressive at the plate too, kinda reminds me of Rucker. Very calm at the plate. Lawson came alive today.
This team has serious speed and can cause problems on the base paths.
ONLY CONCERN: Catcher...Russell's throws were not very accurate, he did look good framing. Taylor looked good today, wish we could have seen him throw down. Did the HBP in the head ding him some and cause him to come out of the game? Only one AB and played 4 innings?
I know, I know...TLDR. VOLS ARE LEGIT AGAIN and I dont see that changing while TV is in Knoxville.
