We lost a huge VFL early Sunday morning to a single-car accident here in Nashville. His name was Leland Marrero (Class of '13) and he was not only an employee but a very close friend as well. He received his degree in Communications and worked for/with me at Lucent Logistics here in Nashville. Leland was the sports anchor for VOLTV and was very, very good at it. He always told me that sports broadcasting was his true passion. He definitely had the skills for it!

He leaves behind his Mom and Dad as well as two sisters (both in their 20s), a younger sister who is 13 and a younger brother who is 12. His younger brother was his world and vice versa. The brother is also a phenomenal athlete with a very bright future in both football and soccer. I personally am going to do everything I can to be at everyone of his brother's games here in Nashville because I know Leland wouldn't hesitate to do the same for me.

Leland also leaves behind a very, very large group of friends who are mostly UT Alums, too. This has been a pretty rough last couple of days; however, the love and support being shown by his friends and family is truly remarkable and what it means to be a part of the volunteer family.

Please send your thoughts and prayers to the Marrero family in this very difficult time as they've never experienced a tragedy like this before.
