a DOOOOSH
Raves about how good kentuckys offense and vandys defense can be in this article and just hates on the Vols. I really like Gridiron Now especially Huegenin but Barnhart is just like Verne, Corso and the rest of the old guard. They have their biases and just don't grasp the current scene of college football anymore. Here's what he says about the Vols:
TENNESSEE
Last season: 9-4 overall, 5-3 in SEC; finished tied for second in the SEC East, beat Northwestern 45-6 in Outback Bowl.
Coach: Butch Jones, fourth season.
What we know: On paper, Tennessee is the best team in the SEC East. The Vols have a veteran quarterback (Josh Dobbs), two really good running backs (Jalen Hurd, Alvin Kamara) and a deep group of talented wide receivers. The defense will be significantly better with another year of growing plus the addition of DC Bob Shoop. LB Jalen Reeves-Maybin can flat play.
What we don’t know: While Tennessee has the most talented team in the division, some people really wonder if the Vols are ready for prime time. They had a difficult time closing out games last season, losing to Oklahoma after blowing a 17-0 lead and falling to Florida (28-27) and Arkansas (24-20). Tennessee only lost once the rest of the season and that was to Alabama (19-14), the eventual national champion, in Tuscaloosa. You can’t overstate how big the September 24 game with Florida in Knoxville is for Jones and the future of this program. Florida has won 11 in a row over Tennessee.
Jones says: “No question we are a better football team. Our players have learned that the key is getting better each day. Now we have to take the next step.”
First game: September 1 vs. Appalachian State.
