An effective AD needs to have a lot of influence at the NCAA and SEC level. Fulmer has had a number of influential people who disliked him and or disrespected him over two issues:
The role he played in investigations that resulted in a filthy Alabama football program, which ultimately led to serious sanctions. Tide lovers and supporters still hate him to this day, and like it or not, Alabama totally controls the SEC today.
The perception that he stabbed Majors in the back. There is a contingent of old line UT fans that resent Fulmer to this day over the Majors firing. And Johnny had a lot of close friends in the media, some of whom are still around, that enjoyed any chance to give Fulmer a hard time.
Would these issues have a negative impact on Phil's effectiveness as an AD?
I am not opposed to Fulmer as AD. But I do wonder about the media and SEC knives coming out of the drawer if he gets the job.
