Everyone putting out names of frontrunners and such are just speculating. Don't believe a word of it. An old general is in charge and he ain't talking. They have hired a search firm partly so coaches can confidentially be contacted during the season. Even thought from a PR perspective this is Ray Tanner's operation he is only the figurehead. BTW, they may have another situation with Frank Martin unless he can turn them around. He too has a buyout and Tanner gave him a sweet contract, just like Muskrat. I doubt Tanner will be AD by this time next year. Nice guy, bad AD, and every cock fan knows it. Pastides allowed him a lot of latitude but those days are gone. A new sheriff is in town.

President Caslen is the one calling the shots and he is a hands on type, and most would say a micromanager and with a Jerry Jones type ego. They do want to get this behind them quickly but there has to be a search process. Tanner wasted valuable time before when the position became open early with Spurrier quitting mid-season, but by the time Tanner got serious too many other schools were in competition. As a result of that and other factors, Muschamp was their 4th or 5th pick. Basically, no credible coach wanted the job, especially after losing to the Citadel, which exposed just how little talent they had. Situation is similar now--program in disarray and recruiting slipping. And, they do not have a lot of cash to be throwing around.

When Caslen is ready is when they will have their coach. I do not think it will be Freeze for lots of reasons but that is only my speculation. Unless they go with the West Point coach, do not look for a "name" hire. Names like Stoops and Meyer always pop up but those are fan pipe dreams. More than likely, unless they look to Bama, it will be an up and comer, maybe like Napier. This is not a good job. There is no positive history and SC is a small state. Every year they play us, UGA, UF, TaM, Clemson and some west team. Muschamp is leaving a dumpster fire roster so the rebuilding job is a high hill to climb. That same situation cost them last time.
