The buyout is still around $13 million and the university and athletic department is in bad financial shape. USC has spent a ton of borrowed money on renovations to try to keep up with Clemson and the SEC and with a COVID season the buyout looms large. Much of that went to make indoor space for fans to purchase food and beverages, but now no fans. Fans want Tanner gone almost as much as the Muschamp. Another reason if there is a firing it may be after the season is they believe they have a good shot at winning a couple of more games. They do.
And who would replace him? His recruiting classes have fallen off and prospects for any kind of immediate turn around are slim to none, regardless of the coach. That was a problem when he was hired, no one wanted the job--sound familiar? We are in much better place so that tells you something.
If there is a firing during the season or post-season it will come from outside the AD's office. Muschamp may be shown the door but Tanner will be more diplomatic but both may go. The president is a former general and I can assure you he is not happy about the athletic situation. I know that and he is a hard ass. He openly discussed it last year. My guess is a decision will be made at the end of the season and if Muschamp can win 2 more he might stay, only because of the financial situation and his buyout. If he is fired it will be followed by a quick no taxpayer money was involved.
There is a political concern if they give him that buyout because USC has not lowered tuition for online classes. It is an ongoing saga and no one seems to have any answers but lots of opinions in Columbia, SC.
