The top 10 paid coaches in the country - annual compensation including bonuses:
1. Duke - Krzyzewski - $9.7m
2. Louisville - Pitino - $6.5m
3. Kentucky - Calipari - $6.4m
4. Kansas - Self - $5.5m
5. Florida - Donovan - $4.35m
6. Michigan State - Izzo - $4.25m
7. UCLA - Alford - $3.7m
8. Ohio State - Matta - $3.6m
9. Memphis - Pastner - $3.4m
10. Arizona - Miller - $3.2m
Most of these schools compensate their basketball coach more than the football coach. While TN will probably not pursue a coach that requires compensation more than BJ football contract, it is interesting that many schools on this list place a priority on keeping the best coach for their programs and are willing to compensation accordingly.
Ohio State, Florida, Arizona, Michigan State, UCLA, and Louisville are compensating quality coaches to build programs for the long term.
Tennessee is a top 25 program for a coach to make a move to take it back to that level, but it will take an energetic and exciting coach who can recruit and coach XOs well in this league to compete. TN has the facilities and finances to make this happen quickly and make a splash in the country at a critical time.
The PR for the program bringing in a proven coach that will bring instant credibility to the program is very important. The positive PR from the right hire is worth $$ in itself.
My list is Marshall first and offer the package that makes him say no and would make other programs cringe that he would turn down that type of incredible offer. If it takes restructuring Butch's deal, then make it happen for both coaches. Hiring Marshall would also send a message to AL that we are going to compete in all sports and not yield ground to anyone in the conference or country.
Next if Marshall refuses, is Archie Miller. Make him one of the highest paid and respected coaches in the country and put him in great company on respect and compensation with his brother Sean and Josh Pastner. Archie is one of the upcoming coaches in the country and would be a great hire.
Engage a search firm and charge them to make it happen and give them upper limits on compensation to get it done quickly.
