Wanna see a recipe for financial disaster?
  • Football and basketball revenues are not going to be there. You can book that.
  • Academically there is little to no reason to attend UT. Or even re-attend... for existing students.
  • Many professors fall in the “at risk” category and, with their tenure in-tow, will be much less willing to return if they don’t feel safe.
  • The brand of the university has been on the decline for two decades.
  • They are not prepared, statewide, to be a leader in online education.
  • Bars and large social gatherings will be limited for the next year (bye bye sorority and fraternity houses).
  • Downtown businesses are being decimated right now and will take years to return. Not to mention the real estate market is going to wilt under the fear of a “second and third wave”.
  • The cost of campus upkeep, staff (academic, athletic and administrative) and debt is going to be devastating for the university without all the revenues.
Hate to say it, but this is a doomsday scenario for the UT system. Decades of mismanagement has led to a place that is not tenable. Lots will have to change and much of that may be the selling off of land and the departments that rely on it.
