WHAT’S UP WITH THE SPECIAL TEAMS?
I don’t have an answer here, I just know that after this weekend the Vols have had two fake punts converted on them this season. Both of them came in spots; near midfield against an opponent with nothing to lose, where it should probably have at least been in the back of your mind that a fake was possible.
South Alabama also caught Tennessee napping and successfully pulled off an onside kick to start the second half.
Other negatives for the special teams have been a kickoff returned for a touchdown at Missouri and a muffed punt on Tennessee’s own 11 yard line that you can argue cost them the game against Ole Miss.
But there have been some real highlights as well. Tennessee has blocked two punts this season. Velus Jones has been excellent on both kickoff and punt returns including Saturday night’s 96 yard return for a score.
Aside from the one kickoff return at Missouri the Vols’ coverage units have largely been very sounds.
