JOHN: Not remotely a good day for the offense, and obviously to be fair not having Jalen Hurd the majority of the time or Alvin Kamara all of the time today was a big factor. But there were some really bad dropped passes, and Josh Dobbs didn't have his most accurate day throwing the football.

Deep down, I'd guess the coaches don't mind that too terribly much. They needed to see some fight and progress from their defense, and it also probably will help them coach up the offense a bit.

Interesting to see Mike DeBord felt comfortable enough to go from the sideline last week up to the press box with Mark Elder today for play-calling duties during the scrimmage work.

Defensively, Todd Kelly Jr. really stood out --- to us, to his teammates and to Butch, who said TK had his best day of the spring. He praised the competitive element of the secondary for that. Rashaan Gaulden continues doing nice things at nickel. Evan Berry showed yet again he's fine coming up to deliver a big hit.

Kendal Vickers helped the D-line look a bit better, with Vickers being a much stronger presence in the middle than what the Vols' DL had been showing. Interesting seeing Shy Tuttle earn some early first-team reps --- which is partly based on his impressive spring and also on poor numbers. No Owen Williams today as coaches try to keep him healthy,

BRENT: After giving up a ton of big plays last Saturday, the Vol defense bounced back limiting some of the explosive plays and eliminating some of the missed tackles of a week ago.

Tennessee's secondary continues to play good football. Todd Kelly Jr. in overtime work had a pass break up that he nearly intercepted and Evan Berry once again played well particularly getting down hill in the run game.

The passing game overall struggled with several drops and the offense was the unit with the mental errors today giving up a couple of sacks in overtime situations. A couple of holding penalties as well. Pig Howard caught a nice curl on a fourth down play in overtime but was a couple yards short of the sticks ending the game.

Aaron Medley made a 47 yard field goal for a game winner. But missed a 35 yard game winner. George Bullock made a game tying overtime situational kick as well. Punter Trevor Daniel had his most consistent day punting the football. One punt well over 50 yards out kicked his coverage and Cam Sutton set up the return beautifully.

In fairness to the offense, the situations were not easy for them as they opened the scrimmage coming off the goal line and were without their two scholarship running backs as Karma didn't scrimmage and Hurd is not taking contact.

J. Jennings had his best day at quarterback. Leading the offense off the goal line completing a couple of key slants. He was effective with his feet as well.

AUSTIN: Overall, it was a solid day for both sides. I felt like Tennessee did some nice things in the run game with both Jalen Hurd and Josh Dobbs. Dobbs was plagued by dropped balls on Saturday afternoon. Ethan Wolf seemed to struggle and was visibly frustrated during the early part of the scrimmage. It's something that will need to be fixed but that's easily correctable.

Defensively, you have to like where this secondary is. Todd Kelly Jr. had a very active day coming off missing practice on Thursday due to academic work. Both sides have had some younger players step up and show consistent progression.

PAUL: The defense looked a lot better for the most part of the time we saw on Saturday. The passing game in particular struggled in the situational work we saw that included coming out from your own end zone, and overtime work as well as some having to score 'x' situations.

The defensive line seemed to give the offensive line some trouble, resulting in sacks on Joshua Dobbs and Quinten Dormady.

The most success the offense had all day was when Jalen Hurd was inserted but it wasn't full contact but it didn't matter as Hurd showed why he's a really big difference-maker for this offense.

As for individuals, I thought on offense it was more about who didn't show up as the receivers dropped some balls as did tight end Ethan Wolf.

Defensively, Todd Kelly Jr. made some nice plays and Cam Sutton had a big punt return as well as a few balls batted away.

Overall, just a strong day for the defense in the time that we saw which amounted to our most extensive viewing of the spring.
