What causes sports experts who spends a lot of time watching sports , talking to players and coaches, sees many practices go and write something like this or worse yet believe ? . I mean seriously does the 1-3 and years of losing really not make one question ability to decipher what their seeing on the field. Okay I am a little harsh but man I would I love a job making 200K per covering sports;-)
But truthfully - I can’t be to hard on Jesse because hey it wasn’t long ago the band of experts missed 4 potential nba players playing under Rick BARNES and unforgettably picked them 13th. Now why or how does that happen or better yet what makes a couch potato claim THAT team has potential to be the best in Vol History? Yep someone ( wink ) said that well before proof hit the winning column .. but How?
I offer this help because honestly I think VQ are hands down the best sports covering writers than all the rest and I mean that! ->
So how does one just know it’s “time”? For me it’s the demeanor, the eyes, the zone factor , I use Florida second half example : Go back and look at the QB play after being benched when he came back in the game .. Look at his eyes, demeanor , body language and you will see the player the coaches sees in practice- confident , purpose playing and in the zone or almost zombie playing where nothing else mattered .. But then watch after the timeout or whatever caused the stoppage snapping him out of his zone. He changes right then and there reverting back to pre bench state , he loses the zone. Can the kid play - hell yes.. But can he just zone in and do it? Maybe one day he can but really does another coach need fired to allow this to happen. FACT IS I have never seen him play a game 100% zoned in but because of the other team mistakes like sacks ( which he caused many ) he was able to duck spot light while ppl blamed the OL or others for his struggles .. But a few folks didn’t and saw QB play was most of the problem- I know weird right !
I can 100% guarantee that the freshman QB will give his team a uptick in energy and that’s just as important. Will he make mistakes - yes - he is a freshman who has not been trained like JG.. Give the guy 4 games and he will play better than JG has this season.. I like that freshman and if he is not starting the next game or enters early Pruitt and Fulmer will be having a long talk about the future very soon.. But Pruitt is a smart coach and saw what we saw- the team demeanor or body language changed down in Florida and lost some faith in JG’s ability to get it done. No-way Pruitt can keep doing same ole same ole because frankly he will lose the trust of his team.. My money is on JG is out next game just as I thought he was out coming out of locker room ( again the teams body language screamed for change ) Saturday and the team responded with a little pep pop in their step..
I honest think this team is ready to roll with the right QB back there.. Do they have that yet - Like all on here I simply don’t know but would at least like flip through the book to see for myself.
Do I feel bad for JG-yes but mostly Nope! It’s exactly what he needs because I suspect he has always just been ‘the guy’. Humbleness makes a person want more and earning it gives pride and that makes a person play better.. Again look at him after he returned in second half at least for a short time we saw a great QB.. Zoned IN!
Anyway why all this - well Because i read “One of the many the problems — and hard truths — for Tennessee as it ends a depressing month of September is that Guarantano remains its best option behind center. Sad perhaps, but true.‘. Play JG and Pruitt will lose more than just his QB- he will lose his teams trust and he knows it. Fulmer is right in picking Pruitt - he is a great coach and no-way he doesn’t make the change soon. His team needs it including JG who I suspect will come back a new player after a little watching from sideline until time comes to prove he earned being the guy again. Hopefully the kid responds with this being an opportunity and doesn’t cave .
One last question and this goes to everyone including VQ writers — Unless someone , anyone , can honestly say Vols can beat UGA with JG then why the hell not start the freshman .. seriously why the hell not!?
