We begin this edition of the War Room in a different way. The War Room is a collective effort of notes and news gathered throughout the week by Brent, Rob, Austin and Jesse that is located only on the General's Quarters. Recruiting is ramping up, as more commitments could be on the way, plus the latest in hoops. Now, it's on with the news.
Let's start with recruiting...
This weekend officially kickstarts a busy month for Tennessee’s staff, as the camp schedule will run from Saturday (specialist camp) until the dead period at the end of June.
June 9: Specialist camp
June 10-12: High school camp
June 14: 7-on-7 tournament, OL/DL camp
June 16: Individual prospect camp
June 21: 7-on-7 tournament, OL/DL camp
June 23: Individual prospect camp
The Vols plan to workout a slew of prospects hoping to earn offers, as well as those already with scholarships in hand who the staff would still like to evaluate in person.
Tennessee will already have some prospects on campus before the camps begin this weekend, as Georgia linebacker commit Trezmen Marshall is taking an OV with the Vols starting Thursday. Marshall visited Tennessee earlier in the spring but committed to UGA shortly thereafter. The 4-star has continued to visit other schools, though, going to Auburn, Alabama and Florida State.
Marshall was a high school teammate of Tennessee’s freshman defensive lineman John Mincey. Marshall has an existing relationship with linebacker’s coach Kevin Sherrer, too, but a flip appears difficult here right now, as the blue-chip prospect has stronger ties at Auburn and Alabama. Still, it never hurts to host top prospects on campus and at least take a swing.
Meanwhile, offensive lineman William Pritchard, who picked up an offer Wednesday, will make his first visit to Rocky Top on Friday. Pritchard is the newest name on the OL board as Tennessee tries to fill out its 2019 OL class (with a spot clearly marked for 5-star Darnell Wright).
Also returning to town Friday is coveted athlete Aaron Beasley. The Heard County (Ga.) prospect camped at Georgia earlier in the week, but is nearing a decision between Auburn, South Carolina, Florida State and Tennessee, among others.
The Vols hope to get 5-star ATH Quavaris Crouch back on campus in the next week or so. The middle of next week appears to be the target date, with Crouch having his older brothers high school graduation this weekend.
Staying in the Tar Heel State, Tennessee continues to be a factor with several other guys including defensive backs Tony Davis, Tyus Fields and Anthony Harris. Harris has a good relationship with fellow eastern North Carolina native Montario Hardesty who is helping Pruitt's staff in his homestate.
On Sunday, Tennessee is set to host a slew of targets in both the 2019 and 2020 class. Cornerback Jaydon Hill is slated to be in town, as are fellow Alabama defensive backs Malachi Moore (2020) and Trenton Alan Yowe(2020). Top outside linebacker target Khris Bogle is also scheduled to visit — the second trip to town this spring for the 4-star South Florida natives. Bogle took an OV with the Vols in late April and has held UT in high regard ever since. Tennessee has made a strong play for Bogle, who holds UT, Miami, FSU and UF among his top schools.
Also set to be in town Sunday is Wake Forest tailback commit Kendrell Flowers. The 3-star ‘back picked up a Tennessee offer in May and has quickly become a candidate to join the 2019 class. Flowers hears from UT’s staff almost everyday, and the weekend visit will be his first time in Knoxville.
Tennessee’s tailback board remains a bit muddled, though, especially since it’s unclear how many ‘backs the Vols make take in 2019. One name to scratch off right now is Tye Edwards. The 3-star from St. Augustine hasn’t heard from Tennessee much at all since receiving an offer last month.
Edwards is no longer slated to come camp this month. He’s already worked out at Georgia, Ole Miss, Alabama and Auburn in the last two weeks, and plans to start taking official visits soon to UGA, Auburn, Alabama and Oregon. The Vols haven’t had a ton of traction with former Duke commit Zonovan Knight either.
Zykamren Robinson is penciled in to return to town next week, but the 3-star tailback from Spartanburg has heard a lot more from South Carolina lately and could be close to getting an offer from the home-state school. Robinson will camp at South Carolina on Friday and then return to Columbia with his family a week later.
Last week in the War Room, we mentioned Peach State quarterback Zach Calzada as a name to watch at the position and the 3-star Lanier (Ga.) standout is slated to workout for the staff early next week. Calzada had a nice showing at the Elite 11 camp and then earned an offer from UGA after he worked out for the Bulldogs’ staff. NC State, Duke, Northwestern and Stanford are other schools currently in on Calzada.
The Vols are hoping to get Brian Maurer, who we had a story on earlier this week, and Brendon Clark, currently committed to Wake Forest, on campus this month but neither quarterback have definite visit plans. Also, Travis Mumphrey had originally planned to camp this month, but the 3-star committed to New Mexico in late May and is unsure if he’ll visit UT again.
One intriguing quarterback who will definitely throw for Tyson Helton near the end of the month is Amani Gilmore. Tennessee was one of the first schools to offer the 6-2, 175-pound quarterback despite the fact that Gilmore sat out his entire junior season due to Louisiana high school transfer rules. He’s now set to lead a stacked Amite High team and plans to throw at a number of schools this month, including Texas A&M, UT, Georgia, Alabama and ULL.
Others set to camp with UT’s staff at the end of the month are several in-state prospects. Lance Wilhoite, Adonis Oteyand Woodi Washington are all at Ohio State this weekend. Washington is still noncommittal on whether he will camp for Pruitt later this month. He goes back and forth but has indicated to some this past week that he will indeed come up. Trey Knox, Zion Logue, who picked up a UGA offer at camp this week, and Gyasi Mattison all plan to camp later this month. Mattison continues to see his name gain more traction with a very solid spring.
