HS basketball 1984 - our region rival was ranked 2 or 3 in state with 6'7 stud who was athletic (D1 basketball and baseball - Vandy and GT, minor league baseball career) and current day would be top 100 national basketball recruit. I'm 6'2 role player who started and generally guarded the best big man on the other team. I was good for defense, taking charges and rebounding, that's about it. Probably like our Vols, I couldn't wait to guard the stud as I had been watching him for a couple of years (he was older). First game, he lit me up for 44 and they won going away. I had no answers, he was that good. Shortly after, we go into a tailspin and lose 10 games in a row. Our rival is coming to our place for homecoming, of all things, and we are sitting on this losing streak. Long story short, we "hold" this guy to 24 points and pull out a 2 point victory. I would love to tell a story about how we turned our season around but it really didn't happen that way. They ended up beating us in sub-region finals a couple of weeks later and he dominated.
As fans, we may be scared to death of UGA. but I'm pretty sure that's not what our players are feeling. If the Vols are the competitors they have shown themselves to be so far, they can't wait to take on UGA. We may lose and we may even get clobbered but, once in a while, the big game happens and Goliath falls. I don't really think we'll win Saturday but I do think we'll compete and I do think our guys are looking forward to this challenge.
I'll be there rooting! Go Vols!
