The Hokies averaged a less-than-spectacular 4.3 yards per carry against their FCS opponent though, so the run game looks like it’s still a work in progress.

TENNESSEE: The story was the same on both sides of the trenches. The defensive front looked like it might be the strength of the team coming out of fall camp, but that didn’t look to be the case last Thursday. Appalachian State averaged an impressive 4.3 yards per rush and were often able to run the ball productively even when it was expected.

Found it interesting that Virginia Tech's 4.3 yds/rush was less than spectacular, but that Ap State's 4.3 yds/rush was impressive.

I know the match ups have a lot to do with Rob's take. Certainly, Ap States's 4.3 per was enough to keep us off balance, primarily because on first down it was about 6 per rush, it seemed. We need to make sure that Va Tech doesn't sneak 5yd rushes in on 1st or 2nd down. Because when they throw it quick before our DE's can have an impact, if we get them on the ground for 4-5 that's not bad, but if they then can run for 4-5 we are not getting off the field.
