The PFF grades don’t always reflect what you think you see on the field but they certainly did with Hendon Hooker this week as he was graded out at an elite level.

The Vols didn’t take a lot of deep shots but Hooker was 2-of-3 for 84 yards on balls that traveled more than 20 yards in the air.

Interestingly Tennessee didn’t throw a single pass
Between 10-20 yards outside of the hash marks on Saturday; no deep outs. But Hooker feasted between the numbers completing 5-of-5 throws in between 10-20 yards for 102 yards and two touchdowns.

The majority of Hooker’s targets were between the line of scrimmage and 10 yards downfield. On those throws he was 8-of-10 for 59 yards.

According to PFF Hooker was blitzed just six times on 25 drop backs and in those situations he was 3-of-4 for 55 yards and one touchdown.

Tennessee used play action on 18 of Hooker’s 25 drop backs on Saturday, a huge percentage, and he was 12-of-15 for 215 yards with two touchdowns on those plays.

It was a really good night for the Vols’ top wideouts.

Velus Jones was targeted six times and made six catches for 103 yards. Cedric Tillman was targeted five times and had five catches for 100 yards. Jacob Warren was targeted four times and had four catches for 33 yards and a touchdown. Princeton Fant was targeted four times and had three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown.

Hard to do much better than that, credit Hooker and the receivers.

PFF frequently dings Javontez Spraggins pretty hard in pass protection but he was the Vols highest rated offensive linemen in that department on Saturday at 81.5. Jerome Carving was next among the starters at 74.2.

Jaylen Wright really struggled in pass protection against Kentucky and Georgia but according to PFF he is improving, he graded out at 72.9 this past week.

This is one of those weeks where you kind of scratch your head at the grades. Tennessee ran for 250 yards and Vol tailbacks averaged 7.6 yards per carry but they didn’t have an offensive lineman who graded out at 70 or better.

Ollie Lane (67.6), Spraggins (65.9), Cooper Mays (65.3) and Jeremiah Crawford (64.) got the top marks.

Jabari Small received a high grade as a runner (81.6), Whitehead (78.1) wasn’t far behind in limited opportunities.

It looked like that was Roman Harrison’s best game watching it live and the PFF guys agreed. Harrison was really active, flashed into the backfield on a number of occasions and really laid the wood on some guys when he made tackles.

Matthew Butler has been one of the more pleasant surprises as a senior and he showed up with another solid game.

The Vols had five players who graded out as ‘very good’ in the tackling category. Theo Jackson (81.6), Solon Page (81.3), Aaron Beasley (81.2), Jeremy Banks (80.8) and Jaylen McCollough (80.1) all were at 80+. Harrison just missed (79.1).

Butler (85.5) and Harrison (80.0) were Tennessee’s highest graded defenders against the run.

Tyler Baron (73.6) was the only defender to grade out at 70+ as a pass rusher.

Jackson was the highest rated player in coverage at 78.3, the only defensive back at 70+. Jeremy Banks, who often gets some low grades there, was next at 76.8.

Banks was targeted four times and gave up three receptions but for only six yards.

Warren Burrell was targeted four times, gave up four catches for 105 yards and all four catches resulted in first downs for the offense.

Alontae Taylor was targeted four times and gave up three catches but for just 22 yards.

Kamel Hadden was targeted twice in limited action and gave up one catch for a 68 yard touchdown.

Jackson was targeted twice and surrendered two catches but for just five yards.
