There was a whole lot of good in this football game, but as Josh Heupel said Thursday night, a disappointing end. Here's some of my notes from the re-watch over the weekend.

Tennessee explosive pass plays (>20yds): 1 (1Q, Hooker-to-Tillman, 41 yds TD), 2 (1Q, Hooker-to-Tillman, 61 yds TD), 3 (1Q, Hooker-to-Hyatt, 31 yds), 4 (1Q, Hooker-to-Payton, 24 yds), 5 (3Q, Hooker-to-Jones, 30 yds), 6 (4Q, Hooker-to-Fant, 58 yds)

Tennessee explosive run plays (>15yds): 1 (3Q, Jabari Small up middle for 18 yds), 2 (4Q, Jabari Small up the middle for 60 yds)……3 other ‘bigger runs’ of 18, 13 and 12 yards in ballgame for Small – Hooker had his longest rush of 10 yards in 2Q.

Purdue explosive pass plays (>20yds): 1 (1Q, O’Connell-to-Thompson 75 yds TD), 2 (1Q, O’Connell-to-Thompson, 34 yds), 3 (1Q, O’Connell-to-Anthrop, 29 yds), 4 (2Q, O’Connell-to-Anthrop, 41 yds), 5 (2Q, O’Connell-to-Sheffield, 38 yds), 6 (2Q, O’Connell-to-Burks, 26 yds), 7 (3Q, O’Connell-to-Horvath, 26 yds), 8 (3Q, O’Connell-to-Miller, 25 yds), 8 (3Q, O’Connell-to-Downing, 21 yds), 9 (4Q, O’Connell-to-Durham for 62 yds TD), 10 (4Q, O’Connell-to-Thompson for 70yd TD)

Purdue explosive run plays (>15 yds):
none, Horvath gain of 11 yards in 2Q was longest rush of day for Purdue

Tennessee Penalties (14 for 128 yards): Banks (DPI), Hadden (DPI), Burrell (DPI), Illegal formation, Fant (False start), Mays (false start), Jackson (DPI), Burrell (DPI), Small (false start), Burrell (DPI), Burrell (DPI), Spraggins (hold)

Purdue Penalties (5 for 61 yards)

Hooker bad misses:
1 (1Q, Payton down near sideline), 2 (1Q, Payton back of end zone on rollout), 3 (2Q, Tillman in seam), 4 (2Q, Payton or Jones on go’s), 5 (2Q, Jones on a go), 6 (2Q, Tillman in end zone), 7 (2Q, Jones and Tillman in same spot), 8 (2Q, miscommunication with Hyatt), 9 (4Q, Hyatt down middle of field), 10 (4Q, Jones)

Who’s Hot: Cedric Tillman, Velus Jones, Hendon Hooker, Jeremy Banks, Jabari Small, Kamal Hadden

Who’s Not: Warren Burrell, De’Shawn Rucker, Jaylen McCollough, short-yardage situational play-calling

First Quarter: Tennessee 21, Purdue 7

D1 (P) -25:
9 plays, 31 yards, 3:48………TOD

Jeremy Banks called for DPI on drag route on 3rd and 3. Not horrible coverage, could have gone either way. Trevon Flowers great PBU on ensuing first down. Questionable spot on 3rd and 1 as they give Horvath the line to gain. Good stop on 3rd & 2 to force fourth down (Blakely). O’Connell misses open WR on 4th & 2, Hadden falls. Vols force TOD – good start.

D1 (Tenn) -45: 4 plays, 55 yards, 00:44……..TOUCHDOWN

Small gain of 7 up the middle on play one. Hooker misses Payton down the sideline (overthrow) but picks up first down with scramble next play. Goes right to Tillman for the 41-yard TD on next play. Defender was at his legs – great adjustment from Tillman to wait and get it. Good blitz pickup from Small…….TOUCHDOWN (7-0)

D2 (P) -25:
1 play, 75 yards, 00:13……..TOUCHDOWN

Purdue strikes right back as Brohm attacks freshman De’Shawn Rucker who enters game for Hadden (Shoulder). Great play-call to roll away from that 1-on-1 matchup, pulling both safeties to other side of field so O’Connell can hit Thompson on 75-yard pass. TOUCHDOWN (7-7)

D2 (Tenn) -25:
3 plays, 9 yards, 1:10……PUNT

Vols go 3-and-out on their side of the 50. 3-straight plays to Small that gets them inches away from first down. Brooks punt of 48 yards.

D3 (P) -18: 3 plays, 3 yards, 1:58………..PUNT

Banks doing a great job of filling the holes on this drive. Caleb Tremblay big sack on 3rd and 3. Great response from the Tennessee defense. Also, great job by Jones to catch punt on the roll, takes a hit but saves several yards in field position.

D3 (Tenn) -37: 2 plays, 63 yards, 00:27…….TOUCHDOWN

Great spacing from Heupel, getting a tandem look past the numbers. Defender was late recognizing it and Tillman burns him. Great throw to hit Tillman in stride from Hooker for the 61-yard TOUCHDOWN (14-7)

D4 (P) -25:
2 plays, 44 yards, 00:48……INTERCEPTION

Purdue goes flea-flicker to pickup 34 yards on play one. Kamal Hadden called for DPI on next play (hold). Hadden makes up for it on next play, intercepting O’Connell on a bad throw over the middle.

D4 (Tenn) -20: 8 plays, 80 yards, 2:14………TOUCHDOWN

Vols pick up 31 on Hyatt reception out of bunch – good catch as ball was thrown off target. A few plays later, great throw over the middle to Payton in traffic to get Vols in the red zone. Hooker misses Payton on next play in back of end zone when play breaks down. Purdue DPI on Hyatt sets up 1st & goal from the 2-yard line. Jabari Small rumbles in for the 2-yard score. TOUCHDOWN (21-7)

D5 (P) -25:
10 plays, 68 yards, 4:28…….FIELD GOAL

Banks great play on swing route to RB for loss of 3. Anthrop gets in front of safeties for gain of 30 on next play. Warren Burrell called for DPI – hands wrapped around WR and never looks for the ball. Banks continues to see the play-develop well, makes another play at LOS. Quarter runs out.

Second Quarter: Purdue 23, Tennessee 21

D5 continues for Purdue……

Horvath gains 8 on first play of the quarter. Purdue counters with double-pass to the short-side of field, well defended by Vols. O’Connell overthrows Miller on 3rd & 2 as he was open in end zone. Purdue settles for Fineran 24-yard field goal……FG, 21-10

D5 (Tenn) -23:
5 plays, 20 yards, 1:13……..PUNT

Tennessee gets momentum on first two plays following good run from Small and catch from Tillman – adds 15 on unnecessary roughness. But from there, nothing happening. Misses Tillman on the seam and Carvin gets flagged for unnecessary roughness. Backs it up 15. Fant drops a pass on second down. Hooker misses badly on third down. Vols punt. Brooks for 44 yards.

D6 (P) -13: 9 plays, 69 yards, 2:59……..FIELD GOAL

Big play on drive comes from O’Connell to Anthrop over the middle for 41 yards. Anthrop splits the safeties as Flowers gets sucked in on play-action. But, Vols force three-straight incompletions and Purdue settles for 36-yard FG. O’Connell missed high on third down, looking for Thompson who continues to limp….FIELD GOAL (Vols 21-13)

D6 (Tenn) -25:
11 plays, 37 yards, 3:51…….TOD

Hooker runs three times for 21 yards on first five plays of drive, picking up two first downs. Payton drops deflected pass on second down. Illegal formation backs them up to 2nd & 12 at the +40. On 3rd & 4, Hooker throws to wrong shoulder to Jones on go-route. Had his man beat, good throw would have been a TD. Vols called for False Start (Fant) on third down. Now 4th & 9, completely misses Tillman. Not even close as Tillman was open in end zone…TOD

D7 (P) -38:
3 plays, 6 yards, 1:26……..PUNT

Beasley great read on swing route, good burst to make tackle for 5 yard loss. McCollough good coverage on third down to force punt….PUNT

D7 (TEnn) -17:
3 plays, 7 yards, 0:44…..PUNT

Vols get a quick 7 yards on first and second down then have miscommunication on third down with both Jones and Tillman in the same area….Vols punt. Brooks for 40 yards….PUNT

D8 (P) -36:
8 plays, 52 yards, 2:33…….FIELD GOAL

Big hitter of drive comes from O’Connell to Sheffield for 38 yards down to the 2-yard line. Brohm picking on De’Shawn Rucker again as Sheffield just gets in front of him and boxes him out. Vols bow their back at the 2-yard line. Stop Horvath on two carries and then sack O’Connell on third down for a loss of 10. Fantastic play from Jeremy Banks in 0 coverage. Rollout, shoots the gap and brings down the QB. Fineran settles for 29-yard FG….FIELD GOAL

D8 (Tenn) -38:
3 plays, -10 yards, 00:28……TURNOVER

A disastrous serious before the half for Tennessee. Offsetting penalties on second down and then Hooker is stripped while throwing on third down. Dayne Davis trying to run his guy around the circle, but he pokes his hand in to pop it out. Purdue takes over at the 28. Only turnover of the day for Tennessee…..TURNOVER

D9 (P) +28:
2 plays, 28 yards, 00:10……TOUCHDOWN

Purdue goes right down the middle for Burks for pickup of 26 yards down to the 2. McCollough slipped, Hadden had no safety help over the middle. O’Connell hits TE Durham on next play for the score. Entire defense crashed on the play-action…TOUCHDOWN (Purdue 23-21)

D9 (Tenn) -25:
1 play, 6 yards, 00:19……..End of Half

Tennessee runs one play to finish off the half. Small gain of six yards.
