Austin Thomas, GM, at LSU

Austin Thomas is the first and only GM in college football. I would guess he makes a lot more money than Welton makes. It's going to hard for anybody to pry him from LSU.

I'm trying to better understand how the 'GM' position in a college program works.

What does Austin Thomas do at LSU that someone in a similar position at another college does not do and how does that give LSU a greater advantage?
