I say early because we only have 6 commits. This is only an early look at our commits and not a negative slam on any commit or HC Heupel's ability to recruit. I've looked at several angles why a young man chose to commit to TENNESSEE other than our great facilities and academic support for athletes. A prospect's offer list is always an indicator used to justify the quality of the player b/c if many schools want you, you must be good. However, hard to say how accurate Rivals lists are b/c we don't know if those offers were "commitable".
Regarding Heupel's recruiting: One, this is his first year, so little is expected especially with our recent history of horrible on field results. So IMO, Heupel will get a pass for this first class. Secondly, we haven't seen Heupel coach at this level and the SEC is a different animal. So this fall will be huge for his recruiting moving forward.
Tayven Jackson...QB 4-STAR ..Decent offer list, FL, FSU, AU, ARK, MIZZOU, Neb(Scott Frost), TxA&M and UCF...and others
Jackson looks like a future star from his profile and it's easy to see why Heupel likes him. Jackson is athletic and has skills in the pocket. His lacking offer list may be because it's early in the process or that many teams didn't want a Dual Threat QB.
Venson Sneed.....DE 4-STAR..Meaty Ocre offer list. Sneed is from FL, but no FL offers except, S.FL and UCF. Only other SEC offer - KY
Shocked at Sneed's offer list or the lack of. His size doesn't appear to be a problem at 6'4, 250lbs, but once he get's into a collegiate weight lifting program, I'd assume he'll add 15-20lbs and be strong at the SDE or an Interior DL. If his speed is affected, he may be a future OL.
Brian Grant..........OL 3-STAR..questionable offer list...Grant is from FL, but only FSU & FAU offered. NO SEC offers & NO UCF
Grant has great size at 6'8 and needs to add some weight at 270lbs, which should be easy to do. One question with larger guys is footwork. You must have good footwork to play OT in the SEC. Speaking of the SEC, it's concerning UF didn't offer.
Brody Foley..........TE 3-STAR..Somewhat questionable offer list. Foley is from OH, but no tOSU offer, only SEC offers: AU, UK and Vandy. PSU and others. NO UCF
Foley shows versatility with ability to catch, run and block. Plus he could see time on Defense if he doesn't find a home on Offense.
Dylan Sampson...RB 3-STAR..Somewhat questionable offer list. .Sampson from La and no LSU offers, no Bama, but had UCF. One thing is certain, Sampson has speed and we need speed.
Elijah Herring.......LB 3-STAR..Limited offer list. Herring is from Murphreesboro with only offers from Ky, Mizzou, Vandy & VT...NO UCF. HOWEVER, he has brother, Caleb Herring, 4-STAR LB...so Elijah Herring is important. Similar to Elliot and Evan Berry, although they were in the same class. Most of you all remember this.
I looked at the Home or IN-STATE schools. If their Home school didn't offer, that's concerning. If not many SEC schools offered, that's equally concerning. Again, I'm not unhappy with this early commit list at all, but just taking a quick look, there are some legitimate questions/comments.
GO VOLS!!
