Dobbs was accurate on 1st drive and we protected well. Couldn't run the ball though. Wolfe drop was big, would have been a 1st down.
Bates recovers muffed punt. Great to see him around the ball.
Dobbs put the ball in a great spot on 2nd and goal. Croom needs to make that play.
3rd and goal, I think it was a ride/read option. Dobbs could have kept it and probably scores, but the DE's play did indicate it was a give to Hurd. Anzalone beat Boulware and made the play.
I didn't like the 4th down call. Essentially the same play we scored on UGA twice last season. Definitely something UF has drilled. We ran this later in the 2nd quarter on 3rd and 2 and it worked. Kamara broke Tabor's tackle for a nice gain. Much better call with the space of the open field to help stress the defense, which isn't the case on the goal line. (easy for me to say, sitting on my couch with the DVR remote in one hand and a blue moon in the other)
LaTroy Lewis is clearly not 100%.
I really don't like LBs looking at the QB during their pass drops. Leads to LBs covering grass when there's an open WR a few yards away. We'll side with Mr Shoop on this, of course, but I don't like it.
Justin Martin: In sports, it's never as good as it seems or bad as it seems. He got beat twice by Callaway. I thought he had okay coverage on the second one and Callaway made an All-American play. Martin did tackle well on the day, which is a big plus for a CB.
The drive that ended with the Quincy Wilson INT was an impressive drive from our #11 and our pass protection. WRs made several plays on this drive as well.
Bastard formations (run and pass strength being different) and the double TE trade (line up on one side of the formation and both trade to opposite side before the snap) gave us problems. These are common formation game plays that will stress a 4-2-5 or 4-3. McElwain can formation you to death, he did in the 1st half. We did some things to fix this in the second half, I'll have to re-watch to elaborate on exactly what we did.
Bituli made a very nice play on the goal line. We had 4 linebackers on the field (20, 53, 51, 35). Bituli owned the TE, played down the LOS and made a physical tackle. He was in a 2 point stance, on the LOS pre-snap.
I love the now-screen UF ran to Callaway, getting the guard and tackle in space out front. Well designed play that is tough to defend, Barnett batted it down on the goal line... But that's an All American play. Would love to see us steal this from them. Byrd would be dynamic with a play like this.
The second half dominance started on UF's last drive of the second half. Minus the big Callaway screen play referenced above, it was a great drive for the defense (4 plays and a punt IIRC). Their next first down wouldn't be until 7 minutes to go in the fourth.
If you're skimming this, read the above segment again. That's impressive.
First half thoughts in a nutshell: Dobbs was accurate, surprisingly accurate. We pass protected well. Did not run block nearly as well, but not the nightmare that many were predicting. Drops and redzone offense were nightmares. Defending the deep ball has to get better, I think we can compete going forward. Unfortunately, A&M, Georgia, and Bama have guys who can really stretch the field. Biggest concern going forward hands down...
