I would do this more often than most teams if I were a coach. Fourth and short, on yard or less for the first, ball on at least your own 40. If my team has been running the ball well and OL has been getting some push, then I'm going for it. If my team has the ball across the 50, same conditions, I go for it if approximately 2 yards are needed. Situationally, maybe I go with more yardage to go. Statistics show that more often than not you will get the first down. Plus, it's not like punting is without risks, either.
