Yesterday was painful. I get it. And I know some folks come on here to cry despair because it's some sort of bizarre homoerotic therapy for them, but some of the comments suggesting our eventual record will be 5-7 or the idea that we will be blown out by Georgia are silly.
With just average luck (among other factors, some of which were not within our control), we are 4-0 and sitting in the top 10. I realize we could've made more plays ourselves and that we must expect the other team to play somewhat competently, but hear me out on this.
We have not enjoyed average luck, and you sometimes need way more than that to have a great season -- no matter how strong your roster might be.
Remember Syracuse '98? The pass interference? The ridiculous scramble by Tee Martin?
Google Clint Stoerner. That guy needs a street named after him.
Auburn couldn't punch it in after four tries when we had that incredible goal line stand.
Heck, Florida fumbled three times in the first half (once on our goal line) then Collins Cooper couldn't even make a 33-yard field goal.
We were also in trouble during the SEC Championship Game after Robert Bean returned that punt for a TD and put Miss. State ahead, but boom -- Martin to Price happened -- then boom -- Martin to Wilson happened. Those last two were also within like a minute of each other, but I digress...
You get it. We've been on the other side of bad fortune before but we can still understand the progress we've made.
Not trying to be a homer. Just trying to keep things realistic. This year, rather than playing relatively mistake-free and still somewhat benefiting from the other team's idiocy, the other teams have made some huge plays. Even if we were a mid-major, it's difficult to go 0 for 5 at stopping a below average offense on fourth downs -- especially when one of them had to go 13 yards. And I really have no answer for the catch Sterling Shepard made on that tying touchdown except the guy can play.
This has been said previously, but it's difficult to remember any recent stretch of four games (especially not in November) when we managed to stay competitive wire-to-wire with the opponent each time.
We have talent. We will beat a lot of people. We will go to a bowl. We will still generate a solid recruiting class.
Things really are turning around -- and I'm not even pointing to next year. This will still be a better year than last year and there's still plenty of fun left to be had. GO VOLS!!
