We really like listening to your broadcast with you, Bob and Tim. Has to be entertaining with a big game such as Florida this week? Tim plays it down the middle doesn’t he? Tim never has an opinion on anything right. It’s a lot of fun. Those guys do great work and I try to stay out of the way as much as I can. We have been together since 1999 and unfortunately we have seen a lot more loses to the Gators. It’s nothing like it as a fan or media member going to the stadium when it’s a big ball game.
Behind the scenes what do you think the message is for Butch to his team? You shouldn’t have to give much of a message. You got FL for the last year calling TN out. Even up to last night. Wilson guaranteed last night. If you are Butch you don’t want them too reeved up. He said it early in the week that if you got to have motivation to get you ready and throw in the fact that FL has been talking junk I am not sure where your blood is at. It should be boiling over.
What kind of pressure will Shoop dial up against Appleby? A bunch. It will come from every direction. You look at Appleby he has as many INT’s as TD’s. He is about a 52% completion rate. He runs a little bit better. His biggest concern and why he didn’t win the job at Perdue is accuracy. Shoop wants to make him as inaccurate as possible so you do that with pressure. Get in his face. Barnett played really well guys. His sack numbers doesn’t show that but he nearly got home a bunch Saturday. He has got to have a big game coming off the edge. FL has not proved anything on the OL. They have not played good defenses. Interesting to see were Shoop comes from and can they get a push with just their front four.
Is Jalen Reeves Maybin healthy enough to be effective? He will give it everything he’s got. Is he 100% I don’t think he is. Butch called it a muscle strain. The thing you will not do is not take him off the field Saturday unless he gets worse. This is the game he came back for. He will do everything he can to win. They need his leadership and his athletic ability. The concern is can he tackle with his shoulder. We want know until the game starts. He will be held out of contact this week at practice.
The long ball could be a big deal with Buchanon back there against Calloway? I don’t think it’s just Buchanon. He did some nice things and I am sure there were some Freshman mistakes. When you look at the end of the Ohio game they were picking on Emanual Moseley. The corners in general have to play better. Moseley has to play better. Has to be a play maker and not let the receiver get behind him. Throw Justin Martin in the mix as well. Powell ( not tight shorts Powell but Brandon Powell) and Calloway will be a challenge. TN has to make Appleby uncomfortable in the pocket.
What about the possible return of Chance Hall and the starting lineup? Seeking help on the OL anyway they can get it. They have given up 7 sacks on the season. Better in the ground game. This is a total different test. This FL defense is good. Watch Hall a little bit at practice. Seemed to be OK. Throwing the sled around. Did not see him on any one on ones. The decision will be made the next 48 hours or so. You got to believe he will give it a go at some point Saturday. If he does start I thing Kendrick will stay at LT. then it becomes interesting what they will do. Is it Wiesaman or Thomas at Center? We know Thomas has not played well the first 3 games. If Thomas is at Center is it Weisman at RG or Jack Jones. Jashon Robertson has had a lot of hype coming into the season and I don’t think he has played particularly well. I am not singling him out because I don’t think the OL in general has played well. There is another level of play for Jashon Robertson and he has got to get there. Tn has got in trouble with middle penetration. Has to eliminate that.
The OF line as it relates to the offense as whole? Dobbs accuracy? Reason for the OL line problems? ( Frank rambling like a drunken Hobo…I am trying to figure out what actually was the question) I don’t think teams are playing TN any different. Teams particularly from the last half of the season last year wanted Dobbs to try to beat them with his arm. Don’t let them beat us with his legs. For TN it’s about getting Dobbs legs involved. Last game he was -16 yards in the first half and 75 yards in the 2nd half. Completion % in 2nd half was nearly 80%. He is a better player when he is running and the passing game opens up. he missed a couple of throws but he completed 70%. The OL after talking to former lineman and re-watching the game they have made too many mental mistakes. Just turning guys loose. Other times they have played too high. This group just hasn’t played to the level they did a year ago. Is it combination? Jashon didn’t play a lot last year. They have played a new LT. They have played two different RT. 2 different guards and 2 different centers. Maddening because you will watch them on a drive and they will do everything the right way and then all f a sudden there will be a 2nd and 5 and they give up a sack because someone didn’t pick up the stunt. Is that form Dobbs making a bad call or the center making a bad call? A lot of variables. If TN wants to win Saturday that OL has to take it to a level we have not seen this year. Why have they not been to level we all is expected is the million dollar question.
Coming off the Ohio game do we see the value of getting Kamara more touches? You are seeing growth. Again why did we not see that in the opening game. Alvin adds a different dimension. What I liked about the Ohio game in the 30 second drive for a TD Alvin and Jalen were playing together. Two of your best 11 offensive weapons should be playing together as much as possible. If one needs a break then play Kelley. There is no doubt when TN plays Alvin and Jalen together they are harder to defend. We will see that grow as we get into SEC play. I get this question all the time. Is Mike Debord holding back? I don’t know but I know when you play a great defense you have an wrinkle. A trick up your sleeve. It is hard to imagine TN driving 90 yards on FL on a consistent basis. You better find a way to make a big play. A year ago it was Jennings to Dobbs on a throwback. They had a 4th down jump pass. They have to be creative this week. You are not just going to line up a ram it down FL throat.
Do you think Shoop will line up Barnett in different spots? Putting pressure on the QB should be primary? This is a ETB game. Empty The Bucket game. Whatever you got go with it. If its Barnett flipping sides or exotic blitzes. Whatever the case go with it. It is a home game. You are favored to win. You have ot beat them in 11 years. You win by any means necessary. The question is can Barnett get a fraction of a second quicker to the QB because he is really close. They got to make Appleby uncomfortable. FL will probably play 2 qb’s. Even with Del Rio this offense is not one that FL is on love with. FL is asking how do we generate points just as much as TN is asking it.
Butch has had a lengthy honeymoon with TN? How much does it turn after this weekend? It is a significant game. Butch will not get fired if he does not win but this game sets the landscape for the rest of the season. They have a lot of injuries that they did not anticipate. They are struggling on the OL which no one anticipated. You look at this matchup this is the best offense that they can defend over the next 4 games. GA will throw it a bunch. Bama is Bama offensively. Tex AM has Trevor Knight running around making plays. This is the weakest of the 4 offenses. You are playing at home and you are favored. FL is rubbing your face in it. You go back to McElwain’s quote from media days “ yeah TN should be the favorite…hopefully we can just show up”. The pressure is on TN to win. It will be interesting to see how TN manages that to close out the week and how they manage that in the game. Where is their mentality in the 4th quarter. We imagine this to be a close game and not a lot of points. TN was there 2 years a ago at home and settled for too many FG’s. We all know what happened last year. Tn has been a good 4th quarter team so far but have yet to play an SEC team.
Brent is ready to play….I think he is fired up? Here is the thing FL is rubbing their face in it , If you can’t get ready to play this week I don’t know what to think. The last thing you want to do is get called out for a year. Me and Tim Priest will be fired up Saturday hopefully we want jump out an smack each other.
Brent is ready to go!!!
That’s all folks!
Go Vols and beat those trashing talking freaking Gators!!!!!
