He was there during the Butch days. I’ve got nothig earth shattering but interesting nonetheless. He said people really liked Butch to begin with, and he was a great motivator.
For all that Butch did wrong, his teams did play hard for him, especially the first couple of years. He said the rah rah act started wearing thin though, when the results didn’t match expectations. He said players really started to get tired of the personnel decisions he made. Basically, the best player wasn’t necessarily going to play, and that began to piss a lot of folks off.

He said Daniel Helm was a really good kid and player, but Butch went way overboard the way he rode him all the time. He said he came in pretty small, maybe around 215-220. He was going against defensive ends that were juniors and seniors and weighed 260-270. Of course they were pile driving him pretty regularly, but he said he wasn’t scared or intimidated at all, just wasn’t strong enough yet. Butch would hound him mercilessly and never give him credit. He said Helm had an awesome play and laid out a defender and didn’t hear a peep of praise from Butch.

On Jalen Hurd, he said Jalen was a hard worker and pretty good guy. He said he was a little cocky but not too bad. Like some of stated before, Jalen was just really pissed about being told things by Butch and then those things never happening. Mainly, he was referring to running more I formation plays. Butch told them they would and they even practiced a lot I formation during bowl preparation. Then the next year it was like it never was talked about or happened. My buddy also said Hurd was a load but not the 240 some people claimed him to be.

He had overall pretty good things to say about Butch but said his ways, personnel decisions, and saying one thing and doing another finally caused him to lose a lot of players.
