There is growing speculation that Muschamp is going to burn QB Jake Bentley's redshirt and play him today against UMass, perhaps even start him. The game is on the SEC network at noon, so we will soon know. Some of the thinking is that Muschamp talked all summer about contending for the east, and now about winning now rather than planning for the future.
One local reporter who does not think that Bentley will play went on to get his digs in against the dreaded Tennessee, saying if he does play today and does well then who knows against a reeling Tennessee. Want to see reeling, go to Williams-Brice and you can get double your money and watch two reeling teams. I'm sure plenty tickets will be plentiful and will go cheap.
I have said all along it makes no sense to play Bentley, who by most accounts is the future QB, even though neither Orth or McIlwaine are getting it done. Many in Columbia think Bentley is going to be so good that he would go to the NFL early regardless, so go ahead and play him. That is mighty lofty thinking IMO for a kid who has never played a college snap. Part of the talk too is that with a bowl no longer a realistic goal (like it ever was) Muschamp with all his competing in the east and goal of a bowl talk, desperately needs a signature win, and will sacrifice the redshirt if he can make that happen. That makes more sense (since on VQ) because while there are no calls for Muschamp's head (at least yet) the offensive coaches are catching heat from the fans.
Will we be looking at Bentley, the QB we will face next Saturday? Who the heck knows, but if he plays today, it is prep for UT, no doubt about that. USC is probably going to win this game going away regardless of the QB so if Bentley does play well he will play against us, maybe start. Cocks are going back to Tanneyhill who came in as a frosh mid-season and won. So happy to be a Vol. So happy not to have a chicken for the team mascot.
