Maybe I'm odd. I want the up-and-comer

There are very few truly "proven" coaches out there, guys who have had a high level of success at multiple schools and are guaranteed to thrive in any environment. The Sabans, Meyers, Caliparis. Smart and Marshall are probably the closest, but neither are really "sure things" as neither have major conference hc experience. Both also demand huge paydays, which imo indicates either an inflated ego (for lack of a better word, more of an "I deserve it" mentality) or an attempt to cash in early in case off failure. Marshall's apparent request for an extremely long contract also lends itself to this.

The up-and-comers, on the other hand, have something to prove. They understand that they havent arrived yet, but are confident enough in their abilities and are willing to put the work in, knowing the high salary and job security will come. CBJ personifies this, imo. Pearl was similar, as was Tyndall.

Obviously there are some broad generalities in my statement. I guess what I'm saying is that if we can't have a NC winning coach, I'd rather have a hard-working, confident but humble guy, as opposed to a pre Madonna or worse, an also-ran retread.
