In honor of the annual Jimmy V Foundation fundraiser I thought I would tell the story of a literally enchanted evening I spent with Jim Valvano and his wife.
It was back in 1984, a year after NC State's improbable basketball national championship. I was speaking at a small event in Raleigh, North Carolina. Then after I was done, Jim Valvano came up to me and asked me if I had plans for dinner. He asked me if I would like to have dinner with him and his wife.
We spent the the next few hours together, which for me were among the most fascinating I have ever been blessed to enjoy.
He shared with me that he had a love for touring college football stadiums and he assured me that Neyland Stadium was at the top of his list.
I could go on, but what so memorable was that he was much more interested in me and my story, which isn't much, than his own remarkable achievements.
It was easy to see how he was so successful, as a recruiter, as a coach, and as an enduring ambassador for cancer research.
